The Front Porch View-January 2020

The Front Porch View January, 2020 ISSUE

2020 Vision

While we think 20/20 vision means we see perfectly…it really indicates normal vision.

Hindsight 20/20.   It’s easy for one to be knowledgeable about an event after it has happened.

Reflecting on past years and experiences can be hard, especially when we are brutally honest with ourselves, but we should also remember the best we had to offer, our victories, our accomplishments.  There are so many life lessons there.

In 2020, I’m hoping to catch on more quickly to learn and adjust from mistakes and celebrate accomplishments bigger and better.

My goal is not to have a perfect year, but instead to focus my attention on the things that the rear view mirror has prepared me for moving forward.  We only need to look back to show us how far we have come.

May your 2020 be a year of DISCOVERY.

Happy New Year!

Counting My Blessings

To be totally transparent,  I’ve lost track of time over the past month and a half. I woke up Wednesday morning to see there was a dusting of snow in Westminster, got to singing “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…” and realized I hadn’t yet pulled together my December message. I can’t say I’m ready for the holidays. In fact, I’m far from being ready and waiting to “exhale”.  No worries though, with a little help from my awesome husband and family, I will get there.  Please know I consider you all blessings.  I hope your lives haven’t been as hectic and that you are well on your way to being able to “exhale” and enjoy all the festivities this season has to offer. My Christmas wish to you is that you be happy, safe and healthy! Merry Christmas!

Give Thanks

I am looking forward to a turkey dinner with the family that I don’t have to shop, prepare or cook for. It is this time of year I remind myself to Give Thanks. Even in life’s storms, there is always something to be thankful for. All we need to do is change our lens and look at things differently. Car not running right? Give thanks for the car. Kids not acting right? Give thanks for the kids. A friend hurt your feelings? Give thanks for the friend. Imagine life without some of the everyday things we find ourselves complaining about and recognize most times, what we find ourselves complaining about are first world problems that folks in third world countries wish they had. Take time to give thanks. Today I give thanks for all of you, my trusted family and friends. Happy Thanksgiving!

The Front Porch View-August 2019

The Front Porch View August, 2019 ISSUE

Halftime

Weeks ago I talked about being midway through the year and the need for an intermission. Now midway through summer I’m feeling a little like I need another break – a halftime of sorts.  Life is full of half measures of time. We reach middle age, mid year, mid summer, mid month, mid week, and the list goes on. Do these measures of time call for action? For the less significant mid year, mid month, mid week events, perhaps the action is planning a vacation, completing a work assignment or paying a bill. But when we hit middle age, maybe the call to action is much larger and life changing.

I was recently gifted a book titled Halftime: Changing Your Game Plan from Success to Significance by Bob Buford. Seeing as I am in the middle of what Webster defines as middle aged, and we are midway through the season it was a timely gift for a summer read.  Will you grab a copy, read along, and let me know what you think?

 Hot off the press!

July (my definition, not Webster’s)  – when the weather finally catches up with the season. The thermometer will reach above 90 today. I had to laugh as I am already seeing folks longing for pumpkin everything and cool fall temps. The summer sun has me yearning for snow too…in a cup, smothered in chocolate, marshmallow in the middle, large! Maybe you fall wishers could get one in pumpkin…is that a thing? Well if it isn’t it should be. I know pumpkin ice cream has been around awhile so rather than wishing summer away, how about you run over to your local ice cream shoppe and pick up a big ole cone of it to cool off with.  As for me, I’m going to enjoy some fresh cut, ice cold watermelon, a snowball here and there, meat and garden fresh veggies on the grill, concerts in the park, fireworks and all things SUMMER!  Drop me a comment letting me know what your summer favorites are; I am always open to your “cool” ideas.

The Front Porch View-June 2019

The Front Porch View June, 2019 ISSUE

 Time for Intermission

We’ve all heard the saying, “an idle mind is the devil’s workshop”.  For the longest while I let that age old expression make me feel a little guilty about doing nothing. I’ve learned though, rest is a wonderful thing and there is nothing evil about it. Rest is necessary. In fact, we need it if we plan to remain productive. Here we are, halfway through 2019 and quickly approaching summer.  Think of June as a good time for intermission.  Take a quick recess from work and enjoy a little nothingness – guilt free.

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time.” – John Lubbock

Happy Mother’s Day

Hey Moms this is your month. Don’t just celebrate Mother’s Day on May 12th, but everyday you are blessed to be called Mom. Even when it is hard, when it hurts, when it is exhausting, when your heart is breaking – celebrate what you have been given.  Celebrate the joy, the pride, the love, the friendship – and give thanks, for you have been chosen to fill big joyful, happy, prideful shoes. Sometimes motherhood gets muddy and doesn’t make sense. Expect it.  Don’t let life’s temporary messes stop you from loving, protecting, supporting, and enjoying time with your most prized. Remember, what has been asked of you, has already been given. Give them grace. Move forward.  Celebrate.  Together. Always.

The Front Porch View-April 2019

The Front Porch View April, 2019 ISSUE

April Transition

I always look at April as a month of transition. As I move from winter to spring, heavy coats to sweaters, long pants to capris, brown and dormant landscapes to budding flowers and trees, I welcome a lighter spirit and happier thoughts. Perhaps the longer days help release needed endorphins, or maybe things just get easier in the spring? I don’t know the answer but I’m also not looking the gift horse in the mouth in search for it either.  It is a welcome change; I’ll leave it at that. April seems to be the one month that brings a period of needed “rest”. (uhm, disclaimer – not for real estate business, but personally speaking) where we aren’t quite yet in the throws of mowing, cultivating, harvesting and preparing as in other seasons of the year.  Take some time to “rest” and enjoy nature’s show this month. It won’t be long before we are inundated with outside chores and the business of summer.
