Taking the opportunity this month to give a shout out to all mothers, and fathers as well, who serve the role of both mom and dad. I consider myself blessed to still have both my Mom and my Dad. I am doubly blessed to have known a wonderful Father through my marriage to Kevin, and to still have my Mother-in-Law. I myself mothered four beautiful children, some are now Mom’s themselves. Trust me when I tell you, for me, being a Mom is not always an easy thing to be, but is always the most rewarding of all roles I have, and continue to play in life’s journey.
While the concept of Mother’s Day originated in the mid 19th Century as a “Mother’s Work Day” aimed at teaching one another how to care for children, it wasn’t until the daughter of an early organizer pursued the day as a National Holiday, to honor her mother after she passed. Incidentally, she later regretted having done so as she watched chocolatiers, florists and greeting card companies profit from what quickly became another commercial holiday.
I’m not sure about you but I’m very happy the Mother’s Day movement went from one of Work to Honor. I’m also glad it is celebrated in a month where Spring gardens offer so many vibrant colors and when the sun is warm and bright – just like a mother’s love – vibrant, warm and bright.
If at all possible, call or visit with your Mom or other maternal role models this month if you are blessed to still have them. I’m sure it will mean EVERYTHING to them. And hey there fellow Mom’s – take a day off. You’ve certainly earned it.

“Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2018 occurs on Monday, May 28. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.
EARLY OBSERVANCES OF MEMORIAL DAY
The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries.
By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers”. (History.com)
