An Attitude of Gratitude – Final Take

Greetings,

Rounding out 2018 with a third and final month on gratitude.  In previous months I shared thoughts on choices, choosing a grateful heart, and making a positive difference in situations within our control.  This reflection brings to mind Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, understanding the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future were also about choices.

In choosing a grateful heart I am reminded of how my past has shaped my present, good, bad and otherwise. It is important to recognize we are who we are, we are where we are, because of our life experiences, but more importantly due to our choices. It is in our present we can (and should) reflect on those experiences and choices and use them to influence our future.  The past is just that…and if there are things from it we don’t like, those ghosts don’t need to travel with us into the future. If there are parts of it we love and want to relive, we can revel in the memories and will them forward into the present. Bring them forward not with a resentful heart because they are no more, but with feelings of gratitude because of having experienced them to begin with. Yes, we always have a choice. Choose wisely because your future depends on it.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas filled with wonderful memories and a Happy, Healthy and Safe New Year!

An Attitude of Gratitude–Take 2

Hello family and friends,

As I enter into this second month of “An Attitude of Gratitude” I realize how quickly and easily a grateful and thankful heart can be distracted by the “noise” of the physical world. You can’t turn on the television, the computer or the radio (let’s not even mention social media) without your positivity taking a nose dive into the proverbial toilet. When Louis Armstrong recorded “What a Wonderful World” he was questioned by some who asked…”what do you mean what a wonderful world?” People cited wars, violence, pollution, hunger… and his response “…Seems to me It ain’t the world that’s so bad, it’s what we’re doing to it”.

What does this have to do with me?  I realized in order to maintain a grateful and thankful heart, I have to focus on the positive.  Yes, I understand I cannot ignore all the “noise” of the physical world, and yes,  where I have control and ability to make a positive difference I need to act.  But, in the negative situations that are beyond my purview I have to turn my attention to all that is right in the world.  I leave you with the great Louis Armstrong – listen and reflect.  Many heartfelt thanks to our Veterans and Happy Thanksgiving to All.

“Veterans Day is a U.S. legal holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars, and Veterans Day 2018 occurs on Sunday, November 11. In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day” (History.com). Read further here

An Attitude of Gratitude

As we spring into Fall I turn my focus to the topic of gratitude. October has always been a bitter-sweet month for me. October is my birthday month (YEAH) and a time for celebration and re-creation.  October is also Breast Cancer Awareness month.   I was diagnosed with breast cancer in October many years ago.  I later received a clean bill of health following a series of treatments and surgery and for that I am SO VERY GRATEFUL!

Yes, October is a time of great reflection for me and a perfect time to turn my thoughts to the many blessings I received and continue to experience each and every day.  Today I choose gratitude because no matter how dark the clouds, how deep the canyon, how wide the river, there is a blessing  (usually countless blessings) to be grateful for.

In closing, a big HIGH FIVE to all my sister survivors.  I will see you in November.  Until then, check out some of the proven benefits of gratitude at the link below and join me in an attitude of gratitude.

“Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492, and Columbus Day 2018 occurs on Monday, October 8. It was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18th century, but did not become a federal holiday until 1937. For many, the holiday is a way of both honoring Columbus’ achievements and celebrating Italian-American heritage”.(History.com)

Slow Your Roll Little Pumpkins

Greetings Family and Friends,
I did it…spent vacation being present and living in the moment.  Well, you don’t really have a choice when you are with your husband, your mom, your children and grandchildren. Even when there wasn’t anything going on, there was a lot going on as you can imagine. At one point it felt as though I was herding cats.  Getting everyone on the same page, out the door to planned events and meals was a task in and of itself but we had a blast.  You know you had a good vacation when you come home from one, needing another.  I was able to introduce my family to Puckett’s’ Barbeque and all of Nashville’s history and night life. While in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge we went to the Dolly Parton Stampede and were successful in making sure each adventure was an enjoyable one for all.
Is it now time to change gears and look forward to Fall? Do we really have to? NO, WE DON’T. Though the calendar still says Summer many of you are spending this weekend wrapping up warm weather activities, NOT SO FAST I say. (That reminds me of my favorite Taxi episode…”what does a yellow light mean?” SLOW DOWN.) Let’s milk this season for all its worth. Retailers tend to rush things along for us but that doesn’t mean we have to fall (no pun intended) for their shenanigans…NOPE! Let’s keep our minds on summer at least through the end of September before setting our sights on fresh pressed apple cider, hot lattes and pumpkin rolls.
Until then…stay cool and we will see you in the Fall.
As a reminder, we are on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.

Bob Vila’s 5 “Must -Do” Projects for September

“Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers, and Labor Day 2018 occurs on Monday, September 3 (it’s traditionally observed on the first Monday in September). It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans, and is celebrated with parties, parades and athletic events.

Labor Day, an annual celebration of workers and their achievements, originated during one of American labor history’s most dismal chapters.

In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks in order to eke out a basic living. Despite restrictions in some states, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills, factories and mines across the country, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts’ wages”. (History.com) Read further here

South Bound!

I am SO EXCITED, VACATION month has finally arrived.  It has been too long since we have taken a family vacation but that is about to change.

My family and I are south bound later this month.  We are visiting Gatlinburg, one of my favorite getaways.  From there, an excursion to Nashville, a NEW favorite of mine.  I had the opportunity to visit Nashville for the first time earlier this year as part of a “work” trip. Loved it so much I cannot wait to return with those I love.  Trust me when I tell you we will splurge on Puckett’s Barbeque while we are there. When I say splurge, really, I mean splurge, as in lunch… everyday. It is my favorite Nashville eatery.  If you have never been, it alone is worth the trip (mmm, I can smell and taste it already).   Not only does Puckett’s have the best barbeque, their cobbler will put your grandma’s best recipe to shame. Seriously. You have to try it.

Kevin and I are blessed beyond measure to be able to gather with our adult children and grandchildren and take this trip together.  I’ve been talking about it all summer – being present and living in the moment.  So, I’m here with you in work mode for a few more weeks but am looking forward to being present and in the moment with my family very soon.

My hope is you have also been able to schedule quality time for yourself and those you hold most dear.  Time is precious and flows ever so swiftly.  Be sure to not only seize opportunities to recreate but to create opportunities to re-create as well.

Happy trails!

Summer Fun

Happy Summer! We’ve passed the “longest day of the year” mark and are now losing 1 to 2 minutes of sunshine as each one passes. Don’t let that be your focus; there is still plenty of warm weather ahead of us for “living in the moment”  (reference my June newsletter).  I’m excited to say I’ve taken my own advice on this one. Being honest – taking my own advice isn’t something I’m always successful at – but making a conscious effort on this one.

My husband and I just returned from our first summer camping trip, or as I like to call it “glamping trip’, with a great group of friends I call family.  It was extremely hot but we had so much fun and it was a much needed break for me. Heading off for a retreat this week and have scheduled a family vacation in August that I am really looking forward to.  Trying to plan some things and take advantage of every moment during my summer adventures to just be present and enjoy.

I would love to hear about your summer plans and how you are making time and creating opportunities to “live in the moment”.  The great thing about putting this newsletter on our blog  is it allows us the opportunity to converse in this way.  Let me know what you are doing;  I’m open to new ideas.  Not saying if you tell me you are going skydiving that I’m going to fall in line (or from the sky). Again, being honest, but I do want to hear about your summer adventures none the less.

Take care my friends and have a happy and safe 4th of July!

As a reminder, we are on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.

“The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues”. “Live in the Moment”

Greetings Family and Friends,

It’s hard to believe the end of this month will mark the halfway point in 2018…and if like me, you are wondering where time goes.  June is a big month of change – school lets out, we transition from spring to summer, we celebrate Dads, and admit it, we start counting the days until school will start again, as the little ones have already begun to complain of boredom.  Ah, that’s where the time goes…we wish it away.  In the winter, we wish for spring, in the spring we can’t wait to be finished with the school routine, in the summer we can’t wait for the kids to get back to school, in the fall, we can’t wait to celebrate the holidays and so the world continues to turn, and time begins to spiral out of control, season passing season, year passing year.
I recently read an article written by Zorka Hereford, titled “Live in the Moment” offering great advice on making a shift from QUANTITY  time to QUALITY time.  I’ve attached the link to the article below and encourage you to take a quick peek. My goal for the summer months is to put into practice techniques for living in the moment – won’t you join me in my journey?

As a reminder, we are on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.

Mother’s Day Honors

Taking the opportunity this month to give a shout out to all mothers, and fathers as well, who serve the role of both mom and dad.  I consider myself blessed to still have both my Mom and my Dad.  I am doubly blessed to have known a wonderful Father through my marriage to Kevin, and to still have my Mother-in-Law.   I myself mothered four beautiful children, some are now Mom’s themselves.  Trust me when I tell you, for me, being a Mom is not always an easy thing to be,  but is always the most rewarding of all roles I have, and continue to play in life’s journey.

While the concept of Mother’s Day originated in the mid 19th Century as a “Mother’s Work Day” aimed at teaching one another how to care for children, it wasn’t until the daughter of an early organizer pursued the day as a National Holiday, to honor her mother after she passed.  Incidentally, she later regretted having done so as she watched chocolatiers, florists and greeting card companies profit from what quickly became another commercial holiday.

I’m not sure about you but I’m very happy the Mother’s Day movement went from one of Work to Honor.  I’m also glad it is celebrated in a month where Spring gardens offer so many vibrant colors and when the sun is warm and bright – just like a mother’s love – vibrant, warm and bright.

If at all possible,  call or visit with your Mom or other maternal role models this month if you are blessed to still have them.  I’m sure it will mean EVERYTHING to them.  And hey there fellow Mom’s – take a day off. You’ve certainly earned it.

Lastly, we are pleased to announce we have earned our Better Business Bureau Accreditation! It is important to us that you know we are a trustworthy and reputable resource for you and those that you refer.

“Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2018 occurs on Monday, May 28. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

EARLY OBSERVANCES OF MEMORIAL DAY

The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries.

By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers”. (History.com)
